A Joyful Way

1/4/2026

What does joy sound like? Is it a contented silence, the gentle sounds of bird song and a breeze in the trees, or maybe something more exuberant? Recently I heard an answer that was impossible to ignore.
Recently, a neighbouring Methodist church hosted a Christian Ghanian singing group called Joyful Way. The worship they led was upbeat, vibrant and deeply joyful. There were rich harmonies, contagious rhythms, and the kind of wholehearted singing that is incredibly uplifting. It was the sort of worship that makes it hard to stay still, and even harder not to smile.
Yet what struck me most was not just the energy, but the name: Joyful Way.
In the weeks before Easter we often think of the ‘way of Jesus’ as a serious and demanding path. It is the path that took Jesus towards the destitute, the exclude and the oppressed. It is the road that leads to betrayal, suffering and the cross. It is not an easy journey, and the Gospels do not pretend that it is. Jesus himself speaks of taking up the cross and following him.
And yet, the way of Jesus that we’re invited to follow is never only a difficult one. It is, first and foremost, a joyful way. And it’s not unusual to discover that difficulty, challenge and purpose are a key part of the most rewardingly joyful journeys.
The cross is not the end of Jesus’ story. Beyond the cross of Good Friday lies Easter morning. Beyond the darkness of the tomb comes the light of resurrection. The risen Jesus meets his disciples not with despair, but with peace, hope and new life.
That means the path of faith, even when it leads through difficult places, is ultimately shaped by joy. It is the deep joy of knowing that love is stronger than death and that our life in Jesus cannot be contained by the grave.
Perhaps that is why the music of Joyful Way feels so uplifting. Their songs are not naïve or superficial; they are joyful because they are firmly rooted in faith.
In our journey through Holy week we walk the way of the cross. But we do so knowing that it is, in the end, the most profoundly joyful way.
